Too soon for a Super Bowl preview?

Updated: Oct 14, 2022

Yes. It is way, way too soon. But we won't let that stop us, will we?

Blayze hopes QB Justin Hebert can lead the way to an upset win over the Beaters this week.

Ok, so it was a rough first week prognosticating the JSFL’s opening week of action. I (and, yes, Chuck, this is Vern writing this, not Ron... check the attribution on the posts, dude) actually figured since I was picking winners in the paddock at Del Mar that I could somehow look into the abyss and pick winners in this fantasy world we live and die with.

We picked two outright winners and whiffed badly on two more, and did not come close in the one we ruled a “toss-up.” Two out of five? Better than some. Worse than most. That kind of an average getting a Major League hitter into the Hall of Fame, but coin flips in this realm gets you sent to Barstow to spend the winter slinging French fries at the biggest McDonald’s west of the Mississippi.

Looking ahead to Week 2, we appear to have two more “toss-ups” and better than even odds that the Recliners will improve to 2-0, leaving the Band Aids likely in the first 0-2 hole Bob Garcia has seen in 20 seasons.

And, did we mention four Silent Brothers won in the opener. Who the fuck saw that coming?

Game of the Week

Blazing Saddles (-1) vs. Spread Beaters: Is it too early to label a Week 2 matchup as a potential Super Bowl preview? We likely have one here in the unbeaten division leaders tangling so early. Blayze will get the early drop on Pringle with the Los Angeles QBs playing tonight at Kansas City, and then he will have to hope and hang on as Pringle has three stars playing (Derrick Henry, the Philly QBs and A.J. Brown) Monday night. Either way, there should be points galore in this one. There are two Monday Night games on tap (Philly vs. Tennessee and Minnesota vs. Buffalo). Being a Silent Brother, I give a 3-point betting line on Pringle and the Spread Beaters to find a way to pull this one out in a mad scramble Monday night. Beaters by 3.

The Best of the Rest

Tirades (-2) vs. Rangers: We are still trying to figure out how John Lambert pulled out the Week 1 win and is one of four Silent Division teams tied for first. Lambert, again, faces an uphill battle in this one against a pissed-off Tirades’ owner. The Thursday and Monday games will again decide this one. Ron sends out Patrick Mahomes tonight and finishes with Dalvin Cook on Monday, while Lambert counters with Justin Jefferson on Monday.

On paper, this looks like Tirades by 5.

Packers (-8) vs. Pillow Biters: We picked the favored Lambert last week and got our face lathered in shame. Someone has to get their first win this weekend and we think Lambert and the Packers will prevail. Take Josh Allen and take the Packers in this one by 6

Recliners (-7) vs. Band Aids: No one looked more pathetic last week than Bob Garcia’s Band Aids. He lost two starting running backs (Elijah Mitchell expects to miss 6 to 8 weeks) and got zippity doo dah from anyone else. The Band Aids look to get Najee Harris back this week but appear to be on the short end of every matchup on the sheet. Chris and The Recliners stay unbeaten. Recliners by 6.

The Blue Light Special

Invaiders (-1) vs. Gerbils: Unless Vern can find some Super Glue to affix to the cleats of Christian McCaffrey and Leonard Fournette, he has no chance in this one. How the spread can be only 1 point continues to baffle me. Both teams should come out of this one at .500 and likely is the last game Vern has a chance in the rest of the season. Gerbils by 10.
