Blayze Hanson's Saddles hold off Gerbils to improve to 5-3; Chris Zimnoch's Recliners win Clash of the Titans against the Pack and are 6-2
Tua Tagovailoa had 28 points as the Blazing Saddles took over first in the ST Division.
The logjam has finally settled into the rest of the pack and the JSFL's two divisions each have a solo leader as we complete Week 8. The Saddles and Recliners lead their divisions after posting resounding victories. The rest of the Silent Division is still a mess of teams at 4-4. In the ST Division it's spread out a bit. The Tirades and Pack both had three-game win streaks snapped and are a game back at 4-4. Then come Chuck Nelson's hard luck Gerbils (3-5) and Bob Garcia's no luck at all Band Aids (2-6), who have been trying to fend off trade proposals for first-round draft pick TE Mark Andrews -- but that might cool off now that Andrews is not only battling a knee issue, but left Sunday's game with a shoulder injury. Here's a look at what went down in Week 8....
Saddles 110, Gerbils 98: With usual starter Justin Herbert out on his bye week, Blayze got everything he needed this week from QB Tua Tagovailoa (28 points) and DeAndre Hopkins (21) as his Saddles held off the Gerbils. Aaron Jones add 15 and Mike Evans 12 for the Saddles, who also got 14 from kicker Younghoe Koo. But who needs kickers? Chuck's bright spot in this loss was the do-it-all effort he got from Christian McCaffrey, now a 49er, who scored a team-high 31 points by throwing a TD pass, catching a TD pass and rushing for a TD. If only he could kick extra points. Not only does McCaffrey appear to be back to his high-scoring self, but instead of being on the field for 85% of the snaps in Carolina, he is only on the field a little over half the time for the 49ers, so hopefully less chance for injury.
Recliners 113, Packers 60: Tony Pollard, filling in for injured Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliot, led the Recliners with three TDs, 130+ yards and 32 points as they trounced the Pack. QB Lamar Jackson had 21and Tyreek Hill 18 as the Recliners had five starters in double figures and extended their division lead to two games. The Pack, meanwhile, had three: A pedestrian 16 points from QB Josh Allen, 12 from WR Jakobi Meyers and 10 from RB Dameon Pierce. K Brett Maher was the only other player to reach 7.
Beaters 129, Tirades 107: Derrick Henry and AJ Brown combined for more than half of the Spread Beaters' scoring -- each had 33 points on the day -- and the Tirades proved once again they cannot win without a big day from QB Pat Mahomes (out on a bye in this case). Only two other players scored in double figures for Matt Pringle's team: QB Jalen Hurts (28) and RB Kenneth Walker (11). Meanwhile, the Tirades (4-4) fell into a second-place tie with the Pack despite six players scoring in double figures, led by RB Dalvin Cook's 20 points. QB Jimmy "Sack Me" Garoppolo had 17.
Pillows 117, Band Aids 62: Alvin Kamara is back. The Pillows' RB scored 33 points to lead this rout of the Band Aids. QB Dak Prescott, in his second game back from injury, scored 25 and RB Nick Chubb added 24. The Band Aids got 3 from TE Andrews before his shoulder injury and 24 from QB Kirk Cousins.
Invalids 84, Rangers 80: File this as another in the "They Had No Business Winning. Again" department as the vacationing Vern saw his team win another schedule-friendly matchup (he would have lost against six of the other nine teams this week). While he's unable to find a Starbucks in any port city he visits (only free WiFi for Vern when he's cruising) so unable to provide the usual weekly preview as a result, his team was able to find the end zone a couple times to knock off the Rangers and force a four-way tie for second in the Silent Division. WR DJ Moore finally remembered where said end zone was located and led the team with 21. Fellow WR Cooper Kupp was held to "only" 14 by the 49ers (and basically zip in the second half as the Niners outscored the Rams 21-0). Free agent pickup of the week D'Onta Foreman
led the Rangers with 31.
