Off and running: Trade sparks first activity of 2023

Updated: Aug 29, 2023

Gerbils, Tirades work a deal involving McCaffrey, Kelce; Move signals that Tirades RB Cook and WR Kupp are both headed for free agency

Travis Kelce (left) was traded from the Tirades to the Gerbils for pending free agent Christian McCaffrey (right).

Draft day is still 10 days away but that did not stop the trade activity (and subsequent trash talk) from getting started on Wednesday. The Gerbils, who were on the verge of losing RB Christian McCaffrey to free agency, traded him to the 49ers-loving Tirades for TE Travis Kelce.

This is the first season of the new "free agent" rule in the JSFL, which according to commissioner Jeff Lambert "was voted in three years ago" to mimic a similar rule in our "sister" fantasy baseball league TSBL, which has several owners who participate in both leagues (including Lambert, who intimated that other JSFL owners had early-onset Alzheimer's).

Previously in the JSFL, an owner could protect one keeper indefinitely (e.g. the Packers had RB LaDainian Tomlinson and Tirades RB Emmitt Smith for most of their careers as a result). With the new rule, you can only protect a player for two consecutive seasons before losing them to free agency if they are not traded before the next draft.

Gerbils owner avoided losing McCaffrey to the draft by trading him for Kelce, whom the Tirades acquired last season in an ill-fated trade with the Invaiders that also involved Cooper Fucking Kupp, who suffered a season-ending injury in his first five minutes as a Tirades WR.

The trade means a couple of things: Tirades RB Dalvin Cook and WR Kupp won't be protected and are therefore available as trade bait for any team seeking an improved keeper (Band Aids owner Bob Garcia, everyone is looking at you).

Another rule going into effect this season is an additional lineup spot for a "flex" player, which can be an additional RB, WR or TE. Rosters will expand by one player, so teams can draft five RBs or WRs or a third TE.

RIP, Matt Huey

We also need to take a moment to remember Matt Huey, who led the Pillow Biters since he joined the league in 2007. Matt, whose teams won the JSFL championship in 2013 and 2020, passed away earlier this year and his name will be added to the memorial trophy. Jordan Garcia, who has been a co-owner of the Chandler Rangers with John Lambert for the last several seasons, will take over the Pillows roster in 2023.

Draft Day and Golf

The 2023 JSFL Draft is slated to begin at noon on Saturday, Aug. 25 at the usual location in Del Mar, CA. Pre-draft festivities include two golf outings this year: The first is on Friday in San Clemente when Vern Ahrendes, Garcia and yours truly will tee off at X. Anyone else interested? Let Vern or Bob know ASAP.

Round two is the usual tradition since the draft moved from Manhattan Beach to Del Mar: a 7:30 a.m. (time pending) tee off at Lomas Santa Fe Executive Course in nearby Solana Beach, preceded by breakfast at the Denny's near the racetrack. With Blayze Hanson out of action this year (he's too busy either having kids or getting ready to baptize the ones he already has), the field is currently at the same three who are playing on Friday: Vern, Bob and yours truly. Again, anyone interested let Vern know ASAP.
