Garcia, Hanson mount late comeback but fall short; foursome complete circuit in record time; Chester Washington starter remarks "I wonder what happened to those guys?"
Vern Ahrendes tees off on 17.
SOLANA BEACH (AP) -- Ron Hender and Vern Ahrendes were the winners on Saturday at the Las Lomas Executive Golf Course as they held off the team of Bob Garcia and Blayze Hanson in the unofficial morning golf tournament to kick off the fantasy football season for the JSFL.
The two teams teed off at 8:10 a.m. and it appeared that the match play battle was over early on the par-3 track in Solana Beach as the Hender/Ahrendes pairing jumped out to a six-hole lead after nine. Undaunted, the Garcia/Hanson team elected not to split up for the back nine.
Power lines were hit (Garcia). Trees were hit (by all) and many laughs were enjoyed. The battle was over in record time (all 18 holes completed in less than 3 hours). Garcia and Hanson mounted a mini rally to win two of the last three holes, but that was too little, too late.
The two unofficial “Shots of the Day” were both by Garcia: His tee shot on (we think) the 12th caromed off a tree limb and landed on the green; he also holed out a 30-yard chip shot on (we think) the 6th that saved par there.
Hanson's putting on the back nine helped the team's late rally. Hender managed to land two tee shots within 15 feet of the pin and missed both putts; thankfully he had Ahrendes on his team for the other 16 holes.
The only birdie of the day was an Ahrendes/Hender combo – a Vern tee shot and Ron putt.
